First off, let’s remember we are going to have FUN! That’s what this workshop is all about. No stressing. No worries.
Finished Project: 17” x 17”
You’ll make 2 finished feathers in this workshop
Materials needed: 

• A variety of colors, enough to make your Strata (described below) 20long x 30”wide

• A couple pieces of a mid to dark color for the veins in the feathers. These can be leftover binding fabrics, measuring approx. 20” long 

• Background fabric (usually light in color, but don’t limit yourself to that) .5 metres or 19.5”

Step 1: Colours
Decide what colours you want so let’s think about your favourite bird: 
Cardinals would be shades of reds and blacks and maybe some olive green. 
Blue Jays are blues, greys, cream, and blacks Goldfinches would be yellows and blacks as well as some olive greens. 
 
But don’t limit yourself to just these birds. Think about Macaws or Parrots, Peacocks and Pheasants. And I have to mention my favs, Flamingos. There are no limits on colors you want to use. After all, it’s your quilt blocks so your choice.
 

Step 2: Assemble Strata
Assemble your strata 20” tall x 30” long
 

The first step to creating the feathers is to make strip pieced fabric, also known as a strata. I found it easiest to cut strips from full width of fabric, rather than fat quarters. However this is not necessary. Use what you have. Cut strips of fabric in varying widths - anywhere from 1 1/2” to 3” wide. Cut until you have enough so that once joined on the long passes you will have a strata measuring 20” tall X 30” long. Join the strips with 1/4” seams and press seam allowances in one direction. Don’t worry if your strips are not 30” in length. Seam them together to make the 30 inches. Don’t fret over whether your strips are straight cuts. If you have some angled pieces just work with them. You can have as many or as little strips in your strata as you like.
Step 4: Choose your Veining Fabric
Decide on a dark colour for your veining of the feather. (20” long X 2-2.5” wide) x2
Step 5: Choose your Background Fabric
Decide on a background colour. Usually light but you decide on what you want. You will need 0.5 metres or 19.5”
Step 6: Attend the Workshop November 9
Bring finished strata, veining fabric, background fabric, sewing machine, thread, scissors, overhead lamp or light. There will be irons and cutting mats but you can bring your own if you like.
